Lisa Alvarado
Thalweg Flag, 2020
Double sided poly silk flag, grommets
48" x 72" (unframed)
Edition of 5 + 1AP

Thalweg Flag by Lisa Alvarado, originally commissioned for Ballroom’s fall 2020 exhibition unFlagging, examines the “thalweg,” a pathway tracing the lowest elevation within a river that often serves as a political boundary. The work is a repository of memory, a vibrational map and a reminder of invisible states.

Thalweg Flag explores convergence, divergence, amalgamation and separation, and references the Mexican Repatriation, a mass deportation of almost 2 million people of Mexican descent, sixty percent of whom were American citizens.

In addition to the flag, you will also digitally receive Sounds for Thalweg Flag, the accompanying audio that further animates the flag in Ballroom’s courtyard.

Ballroom is thrilled to present limited edition flags by artists Lisa Alvarado, Jeffrey Gibson, Byron Kim, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Hank Willis Thomas, Naama Tsabar, and Cecilia Vicuña based on their original commissions for the exhibition unFlagging.

Raise your artist flag wherever you are, and support Ballroom Marfa! Proceeds from the editions ensure that Ballroom continues to commission new work from artists, musicians, and visionary thinkers of all backgrounds. Please check below to see when works are available for purchase.
