Ballroom Marfa is pleased to offer Star Cloud, a limited edition LED sculpture from board member and artist Leo Villareal.  This work, in an edition of 5, is a study of the ever-changing night sky.

Star Cloud is a kinetic work that pulses, flickers, and fades according to a computer code written by the artist himself.  Embracing mathematics and natural phenomena, Star Cloud evolves according to a non-repeating pattern, simultaneously creating and defying order.

About Leo Villareal: Leo Villareal (b. 1967, Albuquerque, NM) works with LED lights and computer technology to create complex organic patterns.  He is interested in stripping down systems and finding the lowest common denominators such as pixels or the zeros and ones in binary code.  His custom programs use simple, mathematical rules with no preconceived outcome that, when put into motion, create complex forms that move, change, and interact.  The work is inspired by mathematician John Conway's work with cellular automata and the Game of Life.

Villareal's often site-specific work includes the 1.8 mile long permanent installation The Bay Lights on San Francisco's Bay Bridge, which includes 25,000 white LEDs.  In December of 2016 the Illuminated River Foundation announced the selection of Villareal's artistic vision for London's 15 bridges spanning the River Thames.

Additionally, his work is in the permanent collections of many museums including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum, Kagawa, Japan; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
